# SheetXL

> SheetXL is an agent-ready, Excel-grade spreadsheet engine. It gives AI agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, any MCP-capable harness) a real calculation engine with 535+ Excel-compatible functions, typed cell values, sandbox sessions with undo, and a human-in-the-loop grid. The same engine ships as an embeddable React component and a headless SDK for TypeScript and Node.

SheetXL runs locally, in the agent's process or a local MCP server. Workbooks are never uploaded. The UI, skills and formula functions are MIT licensed; the engine has a free evaluation license and commercial licensing for production.

## Install for an agent

- Skills (one prompt, any agent): `npx -y skills add sheetxl/spreadsheet-skills -g --all`
- MCP server: `npx -y sheetxl mcp` (Claude Code: `claude mcp add sheetxl -- npx -y sheetxl mcp`)
- CLI: `npx -y sheetxl book.xlsx` to open a workbook, `npx -y sheetxl -e "wb.getRange('B2:D9').getStats()" book.xlsx` to run code against it
- VS Code extension: `sheetxl.sheetxl-vscode` (shared sessions, live highlights, in-grid prompts)
- SDK: `npm install @sheetxl/sdk` (headless), `@sheetxl/react` and `@sheetxl/studio-mui` (UI)

- SpreadsheetBench verified-400: 93.7% (374 of 399 tasks, Claude Opus 5.5, October 2026); tuning runs between 94.5% and 97.75%
- Per task on the same 400 tasks: about 3.3k output tokens, 11 tool calls, 50 seconds
